 Deepwater Horizon rig worker Tyrone Benton : BP was told of oil safety fault weeks before blast - CNN Anderson Cooper, June 22, 2010
CNN Special Investigations Unit report that Tyrone Benton reported a leak in BPs Blowout Preventer 2 weeks before the explosion. Benton is a former worker on the rig who survived the deadly explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. His job was to assist with remote operated vehicles in surveying the mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU). He says that the Blowout Preventer was leaking and BP & Transocean had been made aware in an email his supervisor sent to both companies. The Blowout Preventer is the crucial piece of equipment that failed to work and prevent the oil from gushing out from 1 mile under the sea, creating the most catastrophic environmental disaster in the history of the United States of America. News release : Houston, TX (PRWEB) June 22, 2010 -- Tyrone Benton, an honest, hard-working ROV tech for Oceaneering, was simply doing his job as a contractor working on the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig when his underwater equipment noted a leak of hydraulic fluid in the rigs blowout preventer before the massive explosion of April 20, 2010. His job was to assist with remote operated vehicles in surveying the mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU). He reported his findings to his supervisor and the information presumably went onward up the chain of command. However, as we now know, BP sadly did not act on this information and stop its drilling operations to repair the leak. Unaware of the impact his statements would have, Mr. Benton chose to speak with the media about his work and findings. His video interview with the BBC created media frenzy.
