Unit 1 at the Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Luzerne County, Pa., resumed generating electricity for customers Monday (7/2) after an outage to investigate and repair a water leak inside the containment structure surrounding the reactor.

“We repaired a weld where the leak was found and ensured similar equipment was inspected and ready to support continued safe and reliable operation,” said Timothy S. Rausch, PPL Susquehanna senior vice president and chief nuclear officer.

Unit 1 was shut down in March through June 7th of this year, following the discovery on cracks on some of the newly-replaced turbine blades.  During the outage, workers completed hundreds of maintenance tasks, replaced about 40 percent of the uranium fuel, and replaced turbine blades where indications of cracks were found during an inspection.

12 days later, operators were again forced to manually shutdown the reactor to investigate the source of the water leak.  The utility reported that the leak was flowing into the drywell , and was being caused by a leak at a “welded joint on the ‘A’ reactor recirculation piping where a 4 inch blank-flanged pipe for chemical decontamination connects to the 28 inch pipe.”
